First Home Health CAHPS Data Released

CMS published its first data set for Home Health Care CAHPS (HHCAHPS) Survey based on survey responses from a sample of patients who received home health care from Medicare-certified home health agencies (HHAs) between October 2010 and September 2011.

They can be found on the Home Health Compare link.

HHCAHPS Survey results will be reported on a quarterly basis with the results from each quarter based on data from the most recently available 12 months of data with data from the most recent quarter will replace data from the oldest quarter.

Patient mix adjustments are being made on HHCAHPS Survey results that are publicly reported using selected patient characteristics identified during testing from data collected from October 2010 to September 2011.

For example, the data showed that patients aged 50-64 scoring the Overall Rating global measure were 2.4 percent less likely to provide the most positive ("top box") response (rating of a 9 or 10 for this HHCAHPS measure) when compared to the reference group of patients aged 65-74. Consequently, the adjustment factor for patients aged 50-64 is +2.4 percent. I'll let you statisticians sort that out. Suffice it to say, the data is adjusted!

Patient mix adjustment factors to account for HHA differences in patient mix are recalculated quarterly and applied to HHA scores for the respective quarter. The last four quarters of adjusted scores are then averaged to produce the current quarter's published scores.

Got all that? Well maybe better to just go check out the scores!
