National Family Caregivers Association Announces New Prez

The National Family Caregivers Association announced that effective Monday, John Schall will begin his tenure as the second CEO in the history of NFCA. Says NFCA Board Chair Andrea Cohen, "We picked John out of a large crowd of applicants because we knew he could see the possibilities that exist for an organization like NFCA to impact caregivers nationally. His fresh perspective will be powerful."

NFCA's new CEO John Schall stated, "I am truly excited about taking over the helm at NFCA. Caregiving by family and friends has increased exponentially in the world of health care today, and NFCA is at the leading edge of this vital emerging trend."

Mr. Schall is a public policy and communications professional with noted expertise in a wide range of policy fields, including health care, labor, education, economic development, taxation, and budget policy. Most recently, Mr. Schall was Deputy CEO of the Parkinson's Action Network from 2009 to 2011. As Vice President of Jefferson Government Relations from 2005 to 2009, he represented a number of health care companies and patient advocacy associations.

John Schall also brings a wealth of experience in senior federal government positions, including serving as former Senator Bob Dole's Chief Budget Advisor in the Senate Majority Leader's Office; Chief of Staff of the U.S. Department of Labor from 1991 to 1993; and as Deputy of the White House Domestic Policy Council under President George H.W. Bush. He holds a Master of Public Policy degree from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government, and is a graduate of the University of Michigan.

In 2011, Suzanne Mintz, co-founder and CEO of NFCA since its inception, decided to transition to a new role at NFCA in order to contribute more to the field of family caregiving. "This is a very exciting time for me and for NFCA," Mintz said. "The transition will allow me more time to pursue the issues and activities I feel most passionate about while simultaneously bring to NFCA the new leadership it needs to meet its full potential as the nation's premier family caregiver organization," Mintz concluded. In her new role, Ms. Mintz will focus on writing, speaking, advocacy and engaging thought-leaders and decision makers to move family caregiving issues forward.

When Ms. Mintz founded NFCA with her friend Cynthia Fowler in 1993, there was little awareness of the difficulties and struggles of family caregivers. With the passion and zeal that can only come from personal experience, she was recognized as an authentic voice for the thoughts and feelings of the nation's caregivers and a spokesperson for their needs. Ms. Mintz's new title will be "Co-Founder and CEO Emeritus" in honor of her journey and the high esteem in which she is held.
